In this article we will try to simplify and have a clear picture of what are the changes in GRE format from 2011 and how it would impact your preparation plans.

Just like software companies release new versions with better functionality and based on user’s requirements ETS is always coming with changes and improvements to entrances exams like GRE to better serve as a good tool to scale candidate’s skills.

Lets first list all the changes proposed and then we can discuss if it is good for the students preparing or what changes in preparation will help this format. All three section are being changed and below are the changes in detail.

  • Verbal Reasoning will change- from the way  ETS describes the changes are for “greater emphasis on higher level cognitive skills”. Basically they are making it little more difficult so that they can better access candidates skills. There is a good news too in this section there wont be analogies and antonyms.
  • Quantitative reasoning will change-  From the way ETS describes it they say this section is changed to make it more “emphasis on the data interpretation and real-life scenarios “. We don’t expect this to be a big change or making it any different preparing for this section. Unless we hear from some one who takes the real test it is difficult to now exactly what these differences mean. But we strongly believe as long as you prepare well with basic Math skills and practice the tests you should be able to handle what ever changes they make.  One great news is they will have a onscreen calculator this will reduce the stress and tension for many students.
  • Analytical writing- ETS described the changes to the analytical writing as “Test takers will be asked to provide more focused responses”  this actually is a good thing for test takers as they don’t have worry more memorizing long passages.

As usual ETS is the best source for you to get updated information but we will surely do that job for you if your busy with your other academic preparations etc  if you can sign up our newsletter when ever any new information about new GRE format  becomes available we will sent it to your mail box.
