How Is GPA Conversion Done?

Many applicants to international schools and colleges have a hard time with their GPA conversion. Especially when you are applying to US schools the grade point average is out of 4.0. So from a percentage score or a GPA of 10 people have trouble converting it. When you have decided to study abroad you must understand that while opportunities are in plenty the ultimate decision is made based on your academics and other transcripts especially if you are looking at getting a scholarship.

The GPA is a grade obtained from the average of all the scores a student has gotten in various classes in a school. The GPA allows for a comparison between the students achievements at various levels and based on the scores they are assigned ranks as compared to others in class.

In order to calculate the GPA from a system of grades, each grade must be assigned a numerical value. If the grades are from A+ to F with F being fail and A+ being the highest, then by assigning simple numerical values in an order of hierarchy from 4 to 0 the Grade Point Average can be calculated for a student’s performance. Since the letter grade has to be considered in order to gauge a student’s performance during school years, and many candidates are vying for college admissions a GPA is what makes the final decision for a board in picking out performing students from the masses.

In schools and universities many differences are there in terms of what sort of a GPA will guarantee them an admission. In some universities and colleges if you have a high GPA your admission is a confirmed thing. In others a high GPA alone is not enough. SAT’s are equally valuable in judging if a student should be admitted.  In case of many law schools even with a mediocre GPA, if the student has aced the LSAT’s they will get into good law schools.

In case of international applicants there are often problems with conversion and a lot of confusion about where they stand. However there are many universities where if you submit transcripts of your academic profile and records they will convert it into the GPA system being followed before considering your application. Numerous colleges abroad are trying to adapt the GPA system at colleges in order to make it easier should their students want to go abroad for an education. With international colleges, they are indeed getting applicants from all over the world and understand relative grading. They will convert the scores and only then consider the application so students need not struggle with the process.

In case of many universities or candidates from India there is often a variation in how the academic averages are considered. At a school level a score of 70-80 would be good and above 90 would be exceptional but at a college level the averages may be lower. There is often difficulty in comparing performances across the various boards and universities. The GPA here would vary depending on the top scores for the year or class and is not a numerical comparison.
