So you have graduated with flying colors and your friends, family, professors are all happy with your performance. But everyone would undoubtedly be asking you “What Next?”. You may have also given quite some thought to what you are going to do after this.

If you are a curious kind of person who used to cross reference the things written in your books or even used to google up more details about a topic that was being taught in the class, then I would say that you are a ‘research’ person. Research can be defined as the search for knowledge or any systematic investigation to establish facts as per Wikipedia. So when you were searching for more information about a topic, you were in a way trying to gain more knowledge. This shows that you have a seeking kind of personality. Such a trait is very useful if you plan on taking up research in the future.

For doing good research, your curiosity is the main springboard. That is why, it is important to research on a topic about which you are highly curious. Only when you have that urge to learn more about a topic, you would be able to research it well and make a good report. You can talk to seniors or faculty members to help you choose an apt topic.

Research is all about originality. It’s about your personal opinions and ideas. However, don’t think that you have to immediately produce brilliant ideas for your project. As you progress in your study of the topic, the picture would slowly form in your head. You also need to be open minded about your views so that you are able to take in all perspectives and then create your own. Research also helps you to contribute to the society.

Once you have identified your project, you need to completely dedicate yourself to it and not let your mind wander here and there. Thus, we can say, that to be able to do good research you should be able to focus steadily. Also, you should be able to communicate and interact and be involved with people at a good basis. Research isn’t something that a person can do alone.

Research is synchronous with a Ph.D. If you are thinking of a Ph.D. after your engineering, you really need to check what all subject scope you have. Some UG colleges are really strict in these terms.  Also, you have to be job-oriented too and do something which gets you a good fat salary. Since you would be spending quite some years of your life in getting your Ph.D. you will have to plan your life accordingly.

For admission into good colleges for Ph.D., you need a good GRE as well as a good GPA.

Once you meet the criteria and you are willing to put in your whole heart into it you would be able to present a good thesis. And trust me, the feeling of being able to write your original work is awesome! Rock on!
